"To the Edge"
Happy March! The last week of February was another week of work, yoga, running, and most importantly, adventure. What lifts the spirit and gets us through the usual are those unexpected experiences or plans that wait patiently for our free time. As part of Yoga Teacher Training, I have been listening to Baron Baptiste’s “Journey into Power”. In addition to various principles around mindset, practice, and diet, he discusses a very important concept – the edge. Each of us has an edge. Baron is not referring to our ability to be novel or quirky, although Altar Ego can help with that; he’s talking about an internal recognition of the point at which we want to give up or break. If we are able to quiet our minds, we can overcome and push past our edge in order to achieve even greater personal growth.
This week I had the opportunity to attend an amazing vinyasa yoga class at Inner Strength Yoga in West Roxbury, taught by Charles. What an amazing new experience! He breathed wisdom and spoke some of the very same concepts that Baptiste often touches on. Wrapped in Degas’ “Green with Envy” leggings, I found myself thinking about “the edge” quite often, coming out of some poses and pushing past the burn in others. Yoga practices like these help us to embrace acceptance and flexibility. Like the flexibility needed to enjoy blueberry pancakes, mountain views, and biting cold air without the daily six mile run.
That brings me to the adventure – a phenomenal weekend spent in Stowe, Vermont, enjoying new sites, smells, and slopes. What a great way to welcome March! It was an amazing break from the ordinary, one that can only be found four hours north. For founder and CEO of Altar Ego, these enjoyments looked very different over the past week – Dubai different. That is the beauty of taking a chance, staying in the now, and doing something you may not have the chance to do again.
According to Baptiste, yoga ignites the spirit and frees us from the weak body and emotional responsiveness. Finding your edge means looking at a challenge square in the eyes and committing to the entire journey. It is similar to arriving at black diamond trail, looking down over the edge, feeling the apprehension, and fully going for it.
This week’s intention: go deeper. Find your inner edge and go past it. Face every challenge with the true intention to exceed your preconceived capabilities.
